Why is my baby constipated after starting solids?
Starting solids is exciting—but if your baby suddenly starts grunting, straining, or going days without a poop, it can feel a lot less fun. Constipation is super common when solids come into the picture, but that doesn’t mean it has to be your new normal.
Let’s clear one thing up: babies aren’t constipated just because they haven’t pooed today. True constipation is about more than frequency—think hard, dry poos, discomfort, and a whole lot of fussing.
There are a bunch of reasons why things slow down at this stage:
An immature gut suddenly adjusting to new textures and fibres
A diet high in BRAT foods (banana, rice, applesauce, toast)
Constipating extras like pasteurised dairy, iron-fortified baby cereal, or not enough healthy fats
Not enough liquid (yep, water matters—even in tiny sips)
Poor gut flora balance after illness or antibiotics
The good news? Constipation in your baby is usually fixable with a few smart tweaks. Think "P" fruits, nourishing fats like avocado or chia, and watching fibre + fluids without overloading a brand-new gut too fast.
But—and here’s the catch—it’s not just about food.
Understanding your baby’s rhythm, temperament, and what their little gut needs takes a personalised approach. That’s where I come in.
💩 If you’re dealing with ongoing constipation or want to start solids in a way that supports their digestion from day one, I’d love to help.
